Requirements to Become an Interior Designer
Interior Designers plan and decorate the interior of all kinds of buildings. They are normally required to make the buildings more attractive and comfortable. A person cannot become a successful interior designer with just minimal design qualifications. One needs to have good creativity and aesthetic sense if he or she wants to be a professional interior designer.
In addition to this, interior designers are required to have good communication skills as well since one of the most important parts of their job is to communicate their design to their clients. Therefore, designing requires great passion and there can be no compromise on it.
For interior design training, The National Association of Schools of Art and Design accredits about 300 postsecondary institutions. The admission requirements for such institutions are pretty high as they require their applicants to submit their art work as a proof to their artistic ability. Their course work includes CAD, drawing, perspective, spatial planning, color, fabrics, furniture design, ethics, and psychology. Moreover, National Kitchen and Bath Association also offer certifications in residential kitchen and bath design.
Postsecondary education is the key requirement for entry level positions in interior designs. It takes about two to three years for the completion interior design training programs. Certificates or Associate degrees are awarded to graduates who complete two to three year training programs. Such graduates normally work as assistants to interior designers. On the other hand, graduates with a bachelor’s degree can peruse a formal design apprenticeship program.
After completing apprenticeship program, interior designers can then start working on their own.
Entry level Interior designers require at least 1 to 3 years of training before getting employed for high positions. Once the training is complete, an experienced interior designer may work as a chief designer or he may opt to o specialize in one aspect of interior design.
